A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away........................
For a long time I wished to
have in my collection, an X-Wing of good dimensions, sized of a studio model ( no
needs to say that the site is dedicated to that! ) and here we are,
the
"thing" is made !!!
I did not have at the begenning, nobody documents concerning this machine and I had to base myself on the AMT model in the 1/72 scale to appreciate the forms and make screen shots on the DVD'sTrilogy. Among others, I would like to thank my friend Jean-Marc Deschamps who supplied me some resin details of Scott Alexander's model which is about of the same size as mine and which without these, my working time would have been doubled or tripled!! Thank you Jean-Marc!!
I began my model by getting me the toy from HASBRO, which as I have just said it, is in dimensions almost identical of those of Scott Alexander. I preserved only the fuselage, the cockpit window and all the rests parts went in the dustbin !!
The front nose joined also the dustbins and was replaced by a wooden and plastic master sculpture, then molded in silicon and casted in resin PU. I scratched the ailerons in plexiglass, respecting the details of the internal faces, make boosters in PVC tubes with details in brass threads, plastic card and detailing with commercial models parts, respected the "soufflé" between wings makes it in plexiglass, engraved completely the model, the bottom of the cockpit windows was make in transparent plexiglass and plastic card, I scratched completely the internal cockpit, the mainboard is from a commercial model plane in the 32nd scale which I molded and casted in resin, seat in Plastic card, harness in coachbuilder's adhesive tape, curls in brass thread, palonniers, control stick and different internal details in card and plastic profiles. I admit you that I extrapolated this cockpit because even in films, it is very difficult to see its composition. Then each will appreciate in the just value! Laser guns were made in brass tubes of different diameters. The base of these artillery was made in PVC tubes with details pieces. The parts behind the cockpit window and between reactors are a recasting of Scott Alexander's details. The small robot which helps the pilot is made in PVC tubes and plastic card. It is not a classic R 2 Luke Skywalker's robot because I built a Wedge Antilles's X-Wing Red 2
Here we are in the painting which will be respected with regard to films. A grey primer coat, then a white base in all model will be used . I did not want to make a too much "dirty" X-Wing. On the front nose I reproduce the repeated entrance in the atmosphere of different planets. There are only two red strips on wings (Red 2). This work Is enormous because everything is made with masks with coachbuilder's adhesive tape, then it is necessary to be rather patient!!
If you want to realize this kind of model in this scale, it is necessary an good start budget and to have no feelings to put the major details parts of HASBRO toy in the dustbin !! After that, comes an almost semi-professional work in the realization in sculpturing masters, moulds and resin cast. But, If you have the time and finances it's at the level of a good model maker.
